Hodgins lymphoma signs - Hodgekins (Hotchkins) lymphomia treatment

Lymphomia cancers come in a large range of varieties, up to thirty different ones. There are the five different Hotchkins lymphoma cancers (Hodgins disease) and there are more than twenty five different varieties of non-Hodgekin's lymphomas

Of all the types of cancers affecting the blood, lymphomia is certainly the most common one. It is number three on the top list of cancers seen in children. Lymphoma is responsible for the most cases of terminal cancer occurences in the US, there are more than 50,000 new American diagnoses of this cancer type every year.

What are the lymph nodes good for?

A healthy and perfectly normal lymph node is small as a bean and has a particular job which is to trap cells that contain waste products so they can be cleaned out of our system. The lymph noded also maintain an army of warrior cells that will use antibodies when fighting hostile micro organisms if required. All lymph nodes are interconnected with a separate vessel system in which the fluid (lymph) is kept, this is what allowes the lymphocytes travel freely. If the lymphocytes (that is the blood cells) suddenly begin to grow abnormally, they will have the effect on the lymph nodes that they start to grow in size. There are lymphoma types that can interfere with the production of blood cells, via the bone marrow. When this happen, there may be anemia as result (low count of the red blood cells).

Hodgkin's and non-Hotchkin cancers compared

One method of collating the groups is based on the progression of the disease and what type of lymphocytes are involved and affected. With this method, there are two groups and these are: Hodgkin's disease and the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Hodgin's lymphoma disease symptoms diagnose

In numbers, around 76% of patients who have been diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease will later go through full recovery. Around 92% of patients who have been diagnosed with hodgins disease in the early stages and above 54% of patients in the more advanced stage are today still alive and well even as long as ten years after the treatment and with no visible signs or symptoms of the disease recurring. During the planning of a proper treatment of lymphomia, it is imperative to look at the stage of the disease when the diagnose is first done. In some treatment cases, it can be that the patient first will receive a rather aggressive chemotherapy mix that is later follow up with a bone marrow transplant. Treatments such as this can often be very efficient when it comes to increasing the possibility of extending the patient's life. Resorting to a bone marrow transplant is almost mandatory in a patient where the disease comes back after having undergone chemotherapy.

Symptoms and signs of Hodgins lymphoma

The symptoms (signs) of Hodgins (Hodgekins) disease lymphoma are frequently first a swelling of the lymph nodes located in the neck/throat, that will start growing and feeling enlarged, giving the impression of firm lumps. Sometimes there may be symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes in the internal nodes such as those located in the lungs or stomach.

The place and vicinity of the lymphomia development is what will control what type of signs (symptoms) there will be. Large swollen and quite often unilateral lymph nodes appearing on the throat, will not often result in any other symptoms than the fact that they are there and you might wonder why and what they are. If the tumor is located in the stomach, it may cause other types of pain and if the lymphoma is located in the lungs you may rather likely come across breathing problems.

Hodgins (Hodgkins) lymphomia is often correlated to what is normally called B symptoms. This type of symptoms means the existence of a general effect on the body, regardless of where the tumor is actually located. The symptoms of lymphoma can quite often be fatigue, weight loss, high temperatures and night sweating.

Diagnosing symptoms of Hodgekins disease

For diagnosing this condition (disease), it may be necessary to get a tiny cell sample taken directly from the tumor. If the tumor is localized to the throat lymph nodes, it is frequently both better and simpler to just open up and remove the whole of that lymph node. With tumors outside the "normal" positions, biopsies may be required.

When examining lymphomia cell samples in a microscope, it is possible to differentiate between four different types of Hodgins lymphoma that are all treated somewhat differently, although there are similarities between the different Hotchkins lymphoma disesase types.

Limphoma cancer summary

Hodgekins cancer (Hotchkins disease) is one of the less common cancer forms that got its name after the British dr Hodgkins (Hodgins disease). Non-Hodgekins (non hotchkins) lymphomia cansers are instead the ones more frequently seen. The old division into Hodgins and non-Hotchekins is becoming out of fashion and is now getting replaced by a newer classification of the lymphomas centered on the use of tumor markers for lymphomias.
